Herbs for Subtropical Climates
There is a long-held belief that all the ‘best’ herbs grow in Mediterranean climates. What a load of dung!
There are herbs for all climate zones of the world and they all deserve their place on the table… and in our gardens (if we have the right climate).
Many of the traditional European herbs do not grow in my climate so I am quite happy to stock dried spices in my pantry. Likewise, people who live in a colder climate have bottled ginger, etc in theirs.
In the subtropics, the 10 easiest herbs to grow are generally regarded as:
- Parsley
- Basil
- Chives
- Mexican tarragon
- Chilli
- Lemongrass
- Tumeric
- Laksa leaves
- Curry leaf tree
- Rosemary
Additional herbs that are relatively easy to grow for most people in a subtropical or warm temperate climate are:
- Ginger
- Cardamon
- Black mustard
- Borage
- Cinnamon
- Mexican coriander / sawtooth coriander
- Duan (Piper sarmentosum)
- Dill
- Galangal
- Giant Russian Garlic
- Indian Borage (Plectranthus amboinicus)
- Kaffir Lime
- Mint
- Pandan
- Pepper (Piper nigrum)
- Rosemary
- Stevia
There are many more. Please share with readers of this blog your experiences with herbs in your garden
