John Sullivan M.A.I.H.
(Bach.App.Sc.Hort.) is principle
Landscape Designer at Hortulus, a design
and Construction Company based in Port
Douglas, North Queensland. He has
specialised in tropical horticultural
for over 20 years. Designing gardens on
the principles of identifying a strong
Sense of Place, the environment and the
future management of the landscape, John
has worked on both residential and
commercial projects across Australia.
John studied at Burnley Horticultural
College (now Melbourne University) and
graduated with a Bachelor of Applied
Science Horticulture, in 1991, before
relocating to North Queensland the
following year. He worked in several
landscape construction, tourism and
hospitality business in the region
before setting up Hortulus in Port
Douglas in 1997. Since then he has
designed gardens across the length of
east coast Australia, from Melbourne,
Brisbane, Townsville and the Cairns
Region.
John’s involvement with Horticultural
Media includes contributing articles
towards subTropical Gardening magazine,
Guest speaker at Cairns Tropical Garden
Show and having work featured in the
book Australian Contemporary Garden
Design, by John Patrick and Jenny Wade.
