Lagerstroemia archeriana (Native Crepe-Myrtle) hails from the monsoon tropics of Australia’s Cape York Peninsula, Top End and Kimberley, and New Guinea, where it occurs in drier monsoon rainforests, riverine gallery forest, and in open woodland along drainage lines. Under competition in dense vegetation it may reach 15m, but in the open or gardens it remains a smaller shrubby tree of approximately 5-8m.

It can be showy in flower with panicles of small mauve flowers, but at other times, especially while deciduous it can appear somewhat gaunt. However, it can be recommended as a tough small tree for waterwise tropical and subtropical native gardens, and adding seasonal colour to massed screen plantings.

Lagerstroemia indica (Crepe-Myrtle) in the subtropics has numerous cultivars and varied colour forms.

Lagerstroemia speciosa (Pride of India or Queen Crepe-Myrtle) in the tropics has three distinct flower colour forms.
