More information about other Radermachera species
Radermachera sinica has a native range extending form the Himalayan foothills of North East India, through the northern fringes of Myanmar and Vietnam, through South China to Taiwan, in subtropical rainforests. Young plants accordingly are quite shade tolerant, and adapt to brightly-lit indoor conditions, typically either multi-planted or repeatedly tip-pruned for bushy effect, grown for their lacy, glossy dark green bipinnate leaves.
In the garden it can grow quickly, maturing to about 10m, but it may exceed this in its forest habitat, or in tropical gardens.

Specimens established in Cairns gardens have passed this height, and tend to have an open canopy with leaves tufted at the ends of ascending branches.

It has nocturnal, white trumpet-shaped flowers approx 6-8cm across.
A variegated cultivar promoted as “Crystal Doll” may be a better choice for planting out in tropical gardens as it seems to be more compact, with some specimens in Cairns gardens maturing to 5-8m in height. The yellowish-green variegation of the fine leaflets can be seen easily close-up, but standing back is seen as an overall lime-green canopy which is still visually effective.

Radermachera sp. ‘Kunming’ as the name suggests is as yet still as un-named species from Yunnan province in South China. It has become popular in tropical gardens in South East Asia and has also been introduced to Australia, promoted in the nursery trade as “Summerscent”, it has a dense, shrubby habit, typically attaining 2-3m height and spread. The glossy deep green foliage has larger and somewhat lighter green leaflets than Radermachera sinica, providing a lush background for the large heads of flowers, which are light pink with a gold throat and pleasantly fragrant, (reputedly even “fruity” according to the nose of some beholders).
