Bushfires are common in certain parts of the world. We all know that fires have helped to form the landscape in many parts of Australia. But fire is also a natural and expected occurrence in parts of South Africa, and in western parts of the United States.

In all of these places many plants have adapted their reproductive strategies to cope with fire. If we want to propagate these plants, we have to adapt our techniques to take account of the strategies they have developed. We have to “play with fire”.

We’re going to deal with three groups of plants – the “seed storers”, the “hard coats” and the “smoke lovers.”
