Articles by Graeme Byrne in subTropical Gardening
Graeme Byrne was born and raised in Perth, Western Australia. While employed at a respected nursery he discovered the passion for tropical plant species. It was then that he followed his true calling and started horticultural studies at Murdoch TAFE in WA. Realising it was a futile effort to grow tropical plants in Mediterranean conditions moved to Cairns, Queensland in 1993.
Then the adventure began.
Graeme started tropical living in the epitome of the tropics, Cape Tribulation, engaging in rainforest regeneration projects while being introduced to some of the most amazing fruits and flowers the tropical rainforest had to offer. Since those humble beginnings, Graeme has experienced island life in the dry tropics, the challenge of gardening in the monsoonal region of Katherine in the Northern Territory and the joy of living in the misty mountains west of Cairns to experience growing plants that would normally grow at higher altitudes.
Since then, after many more interesting experiences, he has settled into the Cairns Botanic Gardens. The ultimate in tropical plants and gardening! Although Graeme has a passionate interest in the Bromeliaceae family that passion extends to anything weird, bizarre or unusual. His enthusiasm was so infectious he is now a regular gardening presenter on ABC Far North local radio.
